The city of Zurich is far more than a financial hub and there is plenty to be enjoyed for locals and visitors alike.

A broad range of culture, entertainment and gastronomy are on offer as well as lots of activities in and around Lake Zurich. Only minutes from the city centre, by car or cog railway, you can even experience the ultimate spa holiday without the jet lag at The Dolder Grand Spa.

The iconic architecture of The Dolder Grand and its golf course

The Dolder Grand with its iconic towers sits high above the city of Zurich and embodies luxury, exclusivity and relaxation since 1899. After an extensive four-year renovation it reopened its door in its full splendour in 2008. The listed main building was carefully restored and fitted with contemporary design elements and more than 100 pieces of art by many renowned artists. The annex buildings were demolished and newly designed which creates an interesting mix of old and new. Also the interiors were designed with «tradition meets modernity» in mind. This large-scale project was handled by star architects Foster and Partners in collaboration with the interior design studio United Designers of London. The design concept for the Dolder Grand Spa on the other hand was developed by the American Spa designer Sylvia Sepielli of SPAd.

Pool area: limestone and delightful lighting

The Dolder Grand Spa offers 4000 m2 of indulgence with elements of relaxation and vitalisation. Despite its impressive size it is surprisingly easy to find your way around, because the spa has been designed with the user in mind and with a lot of attention to detail. You will find towels, tea, water and fruits as well as cold towels strategically placed where you need them. Natural limestone from the Jura mountains, Cats Eye glas mosaics by KLAFS, interesting forms and shapes and atmospheric lighting create a stylish and calm ambiance.

The Dolder Grand Spa Terrace: the perfect place to kick back and relax

This is how you can turn a day spa into a mini-holiday. I started off my day with a walk through the nearby forest. Jogging, walking and bike trails offer the opportunity to be active in a natural environment and take a few deep breaths of fresh air. With much anticipation I entered the impressive spa lobby of the Dolder Grand Spa. Having worked up a bit of an appetite I decided to have a refreshing smoothie and healthy lunch at the Spa Café. The philosophy of the Spa is Life Balance and based on 4 elements – Relax, Beauty, Vitality and Detox, which also transpires into the spa menu. I went for a combination of Detox and Vitality.

Now my journey of indulgence could begin… The multiple award winning The Dolder Grand Spa offers a truly unique experience. As I am lying on the spa terrace, surrounded by nature, soaking up some sunshine, admiring the panoramic views over the city, the lake and the Alps, listening to the birds and smelling the early blossoms of spring, I quickly switched to holiday mode.

Sunaburo loungers: guaranteed relaxation

The exterior spa facilities feature comfortable lounge chairs, a whirlpool, a hot and cold water pool as well as one of Botero’s famous sculptures Woman with Fruit. The interior of the Spa, the so called Acqua Zone is a true experience for the senses. This is where you can enjoy a swim in the 25 m indoor pool, soak in the whirlpool covered in Bisazza mosaic tiles or withdraw from the world in one of the hanging chairs in the Chillout Room.

The snow paradise: time to cool off…

Alternatively, you can release muscle tension in the sauna or the steam bath and then cool off in the spectacular snow paradise. My personal favourites were the Japanese style Sunaburo beds (tubs filled with warm pebble stones), where I could have easily spent the night…

The Dolder Grand Ladies Spa

In addition you will find a separate «Ladies’ Spa» and Gentlemen’s Spa, which form part of the respective changing areas. Here you will find another oasis of wellbeing. Relaxing as well as vitalising steampots, aroma baths, steam bath featuring a starry sky and sauna are yours to be enjoyed. Soft lighting and a unique Japanese Kotatsu footbath featuring an organically shaped walnut table and seating bench guarantee  complete relaxation and make you forget the outside world. To recover from all the relaxing you can hide out in the Relaxation room with fireplace.

Treat yourself to a day of relaxation and wellbeing and who knows you may be lucky and bump into Leonardo di Caprio!

Happy stylish discoveries!
