Barranco Grand Case: boho-chic oceanfront dining

Interior Design Saint Martin

Update as of 2023 – Please note that this restaurant is closed.

As an interior designer and with a background in the international luxury hotel industry, I have developed numerous filters when it comes to choosing hotels and restaurants.

In my opinion a restaurant needs to fulfill three main criteria: good food, good design and good service. That should be the starting point. Far and between you will find places that over delivers in one or more areas. Such was the case with the Barranco Grand Case in Saint Martin. It was the design that attracted me to this lovely oceanfront restaurant and the food that makes me want to go back.

The décor at Barranco Grand Case is boho chic and the colour scheme neutral with turquoise and green accents.

The interiors feature ethnic black and white patterns, wallpaper depicting palm trees and oversized rattan lamps and chairs, such as the iconic Emmanuelle chair. The latter got its name from the famous erotic movie in the 70’s with the same name. In fact, the Emmanuelle chair, alongside other 70’s design elements such as macramé and the colour orange are making a big comeback this year.

The wood beamed tall ceilings add a sense of grandeur to the space. Natural materials, such as wood and wicker are used throughout the entire space in creative ways. The overall feel of the interiors is calm and relaxed, but with lots of quirky details. It is evident that the co-owner of the Barranco Grand Case, Anne, has got a flair for beautiful things. There’s lots of attention to detail and as famous designer Charles Eames already said ‘The details are not the details, they make the design’.

Anne told me that her inspiration came from Australian design magazines. However, most of the furniture and deco items were made in Morocco and South Africa. Boho chic is trending in Saint Martin and beyond, but it’s fair to say that the style is an ideal match for the tropical chic environment of Saint Martin. Barranco Grand Case found the perfect balance between relaxed and sophisticated. Tropical dining at its best.

A stylish place with mesmerizing views is how to best describe the restaurant Barranco Grand Case.

The covered wooden patio overlooks the bay of Grand Case and allows for a lovely ocean breeze without being directly exposed to the elements. I highly recommend getting there before sunset to enjoy a glass of rosé or one of their creative cocktails whilst watching the spectacular Grand Case sunset. This will set the mood for the culinary journey awaiting you.

The menu offers a choice of creative dishes. And unusual combinations and the show kitchen will allow you to watch the Kitchen Chefs in action. Both Chefs used to cook alongside the famous French Chef Anne Sophie Pic at her 3-star Michelin restaurant in Valence, France. The presentation, flavours and combinations are a testimony that they have learned from the best. I chose the Ceviche, one of my favourite dishes, for my appetizer and a Saint-Pierre fish for my main – both were an explosion of flavours, yet very harmonious and simply delicious!

In conclusion, at the Barranco Grand Case you will find the best of two worlds – tropical flair and haute cuisine!

Bon appetit!

P.S. In November 2019 Barranco Grand Case was awarded 13.5 out of 20 Gault Millau points! I think it is well deserved!
