Kempinski Hotel Bahia: life is a beach

First impressions count and the Kempinski Hotel Bahia, conveniently located between Marbella and Estepona, sure knows how to make one. As I entered the resort I felt like I was in for a grand experience. Whilst walking through the impressive lobby and past the boho-chic lobby bar ‘Black Rose’, that holiday feeling started to creep up… Once I stepped outside onto the terrace, overlooking the stunning landscaped gardens, pools and the Mediterranean Sea, I smiled and thought to myself: « Yep, I am on holidays. »

The generously sized property only consists of 145 rooms and suites. The […]

Barranco Grand Case: boho-chic oceanfront dining

As an interior designer and with my background in the international luxury hotel industry, I have developed numerous filters when it comes to choosing hotels and restaurants. In my opinion a restaurant needs to fulfill three main criteria: good food, good design and good service. That should be the starting point. Far and between you will find places that over deliver in one or more areas. Such was the case with the Barranco Grand Case in Saint Martin. It was the design that attracted me to this lovely oceanfront restaurant and the food that makes me want […]

Villa Orselina: The art of doing nothing

At the Villa Orselina, « Il Dolce Far Niente » is more than a slogan. The famous Italian phrase literally translates to « sweet doing nothing ». More eloquently put « The art of doing nothing ». The dictionary describes it as ‘Sheer indulgent relaxation and blissful laziness, the enjoyment of idleness’. In theory, an easy concept, yet many (myself included) struggle with it, unless…

It had been a few years since my last visit to Ticino and I couldn’t help but wonder why I don’t visit more often. At only 2.5 hours from Zurich (2 hours from Milan) you find yourself […]

Moving home: How to plan your move

According to psychologists moving home is not only very emotional, but also one of the most stressful experiences in our lives. Like any major life change it is a disruption to ‘life as we know it’. This causes uncertainty, which in return causes anxiety and stress. In addition, the word home is charged with emotions, feelings and memories and moving is filled with symbolism. On one hand there’s a feeling of loss, anxiety and fear and on the other hand there’s excitement, anticipation and the hope for new beginnings.

Palapa Grill & Lounge: new hot spot in Saint Martin

Everyone likes a good story. When I visited the recently reopened Palapa Grill & Lounge, I soon realised that even though there’s lots to discover in terms of design, there is much more to the place than what meets the eye. The owner, Barbara, had a story for almost every single piece of furniture and it made discovering her restaurant a true adventure.

As you enter through the lounge, you are met with an explosion of colours, patterns and styles. Some quirky decorative items, gilded mirrors and artwork complete the eclectic look of the Palapa Lounge. […]

Le Sereno Saint Barths: barefoot luxury

Saint Barthélemy or short Saint Barts lies in the French West Indies and is one of the most sought after travel destinations in the world. A tropical playground for the rich and famous. This being my first visit to Saint Barths, I had no idea what to expect. Arriving by sea from Saint Martin, I quickly realised that this island is like no other. As the ferry slowly sailed into the port, we were surrounded by dozens of mega yachts. Arriving at the port, we were met with the picturesque little town Gustavia. It’s like a Caribbean […]

Hotel Arnica Scuol: minimalism with a view

Location is arguably the most important factor when it comes to real estate. So what do you do when you inherit an auto and transport company on the edge of a popular mountain resort overlooking a beautiful valley? Well, the new owners didn’t have to think twice. Running a small hotel had always been a dream of theirs and in 2001 they took the leap and opened the Hotel Arnica Scuol, a small 3-star hotel.

If you have been reading my blog posts about the hotels that I visit, you will have noticed that usually I […]

Maiensässhotel Guarda Val: pampered with authenticity

Spending time at the Maiensässhotel Guarda Val felt like stepping into a Swiss fairytale. When I was a little girl I had two favourite books; ‘The Jungle Book‘ and the ‘Schellen-Ursli‘ (A bell for Ursli). The latter is one of Switzerland’s most famous children books (after ‘Heidi’) and tells the story of a little boy in the Lower Engadine, his adventures with regards to the traditional annual event the ‘Chalandamarz‘ and the simple life in the Swiss Alps in general.

At the Maiensässhotelhotel Guarda Val, you will experience such simplicity, but combined with luxury. I’ts a truly […]

Huus Gstaad: multi-cultural melting pot in the Swiss Alps

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit a beautiful design hotel in the region of Gstaad. Gstaad may be difficult to pronounce for many, yet it is one of the best known mountain resorts in Switzerland, especially amongst the elite. Like many people, I used to think that Gstaad is only for the rich and famous and somewhat on the snobby side. I was therefore pleasantly surprised to find a very sophisticated, yet relaxed atmosphere in the village of Gstaad, much like in the Huus Gstaad where I spent a couple of nights.

Thanks to my […]

Vitznauerhof: lots of smiles and a touch of magic

The scenic cruise across Lake Lucerne set the mood for the weekend ahead. Glorious sunshine, blue skies and glistening water against a stunning mountain range and picturesque villages got us equally excited as the Chinese tourists onboard. The Vitznauerhof, a building like from a fairytale, caught our sight from afar as we approached our destination.

Quaint, idyllic and charming would be the best way to describe the Vitznauerhof which sits on the shores of Lake Lucerne at the far end of the village Vitznau and with the Rigi as a backdrop. The beautiful gardens of the […]
