Urban, quirky and retro come to mind as you walk into the lounge of the 25hours hotel in ZüriWest (Zurich West), where modern glass and steel high rises have become the norm. Historically this area was Zurich’s industrial zone, which is still visible in parts creating an eclectic mix of industrial warehouses and new developments. The so-called Toni-Areal for instance, once home to the Swiss dairy giant Toni, was refurbished to the highest standards and now houses the Zurich University of the Arts, a library, the ‘Museum der Gestaltung’ (literally museum of creations), restaurants, cafés and luxury apartments.
If you are looking for historic buildings and green parks, you have come to the wrong place. However, if you are looking for an up and coming area with striking modern architecture and design, stylish cafés, restaurants and clubs as well as some splendid views of Zurich and the alps from atop one of the roof terraces, then this cultural melting pot is the place for you. Not to forget, you are in Switzerland and the historic centre is only a few tram stops away…
The 25hours hotel zurich west also houses the NENI restaurant, which much like the hotel takes you back to the 60’s and 70’s. Alfredo Häberli, the famous Zurich based designer with Argentinian roots, is the creative head behind the concept. The bright colours and quirky details add a bit of humour to the space, whereas the food is taken very seriously at this oriental fusion restaurant. The entire restaurant is dipped in red light at nighttime and I wonder whether that was intentional, considering red is said to increase one’s appetite in colour psychology…
The Viennese cult chef Hayo Molcho created the food concept. Originally from Tel Aviv, she grew up in a food culture, which in itself is a mix of cuisines to which she further added flavours inspired by her many travels around the world. The generous portions are nicely presented and served by friendly and knowledgeable staff.
All in all a culturally and culinary diverse experience set in a unique retro inspired environment, which won’t disappoint even the most discerning design enthusiast.
