Project Description:

Bruderholz is a very sought after neighbourhood in Basel, Switzerland. It’s like living in the countryside, but only minutes from the city center. The house is an older property with a huge garden.

Client Brief:

My clients, an American family of 6, had been living in the house for about 12 years. With their kids almost all grown up, they were ready for a change and looking to update and redesign their living space on the ground floor. Their previous style was very traditional and whilst they were ready to modernise, they made it quite clear that they wanted a mix of traditional and contemporary. Functionality and use of space was also very important to them, as they like to spend time together as a family and also enjoy having dinner parties for up to 12 people and generally like to share a meal with friends and family. At the same time I quickly realised that they love exquisite materials and had a weakness for luxurious interiors.

Design Solution:

During the initial stages of the design process, which started with an Interior Design Coaching, I really wanted to get to know the family, their likes and dislikes, their hobbies and passions and also understand how they use the space. One of the key elements was seating for as many people as possible be it in the living or the dining room. I therefore selected a modular sofa, which can be arranged in more than a dozen different ways according to the needs. For the dining room I chose an extendable dining table that seats up to 12 people comfortably. In order to marry the traditional with the contemporary, I developed a design concept for the living room that was based on contemporary shapes, combined with traditional materials and a traditional colour scheme often seen in historic homes – dark blue, ruby red and gold. Dark woods and brass were combined with velvets, silks, linens and embroidered fabrics to which I added an exquisite customised area rug. Globes and antique maps as well as some old family portraits added a personal touch telling the family’s story of living all over the world.  In the dining room, on the other hand, I chose traditional shapes combined with a contemporary colour scheme. The French chic dining table and custom designed sideboard were combined very elegant navy blue velvet dining chairs.

Client Feedback:

“When we made the decision to hire Simone, we were thinking that it will be great to have new furniture. But in reality, we are now in a place, where when we sit in these rooms in our home, every single item that we’re surrounded with sparks joy and we are very grateful for the way Simone brought that joy into our home and our daily living. If you are thinking of hiring Simone, my recommendation would be to ask yourself if you want more joy in your life?”
