An urban oasis in historic Schaffhausen

Modern Hotel Interior Design

The company’s slogan ‘Arrive. Feel at home. Enjoy’ can certainly be experienced at the Arcona Living in Schaffhausen. The brand new 4-star property, featuring 130 rooms and state-of-the-art conferencing facilities, is the group’s first hotel in Switzerland.

Schaffhausen is a quaint Swiss town, dotted with beautifully painted buildings dating back to the 17th and 18th century and home to the largest waterfall in Europe, the Rhine Falls. However, it is also a popular location for international companies. Whereas the historic town invites you for a stroll, the Arcona Living is the ideal base to relax and work.

The hotel is part of an urban oasis, which seems worlds apart from the historic centre, but in fact is only separated by the railway tracks. The ultra-modern development does appear somewhat cold, which is why I was so pleasantly surprised when I was overcome by a sense of calm as I entered the hotel. The soothing colour scheme creates a nice contrast to the rather cool exterior.

The rooms are of generous dimensions and are equipped with all the necessary mod cons. The layout is extremely well thought of and the colour scheme, held in beiges with a few splashes of colour, is very relaxing. All the rooms offer a desk, rain shower and a separate toilet. The studios also feature bathtubs and some even come with a kitchenette, making them the ideal choice for long stays. The first thing that crossed my mind, when I walked into my Grand Suite, was ‘welcoming and generous’. Even though carpet floors and wood laminate furniture aren’t my preferred choice, I was impressed with the size, the comfort, the many windows and above all the inviting feel of the room.

Zeitgeist was the inspiration for the hotel concept and can be felt throughout the property. Time is an interesting subject indeed! In particular, in today’s culture where ‘being busy’ appears to be a desirable state of being , regardless whether you are a CEO, entrepreneur or pensioner. The quote ‘I don’t have time to hurry’, which is written across bedroom walls and throughout the property, challenges our perception of time.

The restaurant Weinwirtschaft (literally: Wine pub) is decorated in fresh, yet soothing colours, making it a relaxing place to enjoy a meal. The vast menu offers local and international dishes, as well as a large selection of exquisite regional and international wines. I was thankful for the friendly and knowledgeable guidance of the service staff, helping me make the right choices. In the mornings there is a generous breakfast buffet, which is nicely presented and has got something to suit everyone’s taste.

The bar on the other hand boasts with a more vibrant colour scheme, inviting guests to let their hair down and have some fun at the end of the day.

However, the highlight of my stay was the asia spa (not included in the room rate), spread over 1200 m2, featuring hot pools, saunas, steam baths and a hammam. There is even a separate section for the ladies, which is rather rare in this part of the world. Having been to some of the most amazing spas around the globe, I was particularly impressed with the choice of materials and the artistic details. The waterways and chromo therapy lighting set against black slate create a relaxing mood, where you can forget about the world for a little while…
